Blazin - Peter Bews
After my first Governor’s Cup in 2008 I was determined to take up the challenge again. Since the last Governors I had the opportunity to sail with a delivery skipper from Cape Town to Sicily –in a 40ft Admiral Cat. The Cat took 14 days to reach St Helena. Considering that Blazin completed the race in the same time, I have full confidence in her ability to better the previous time, wind permitting and hopefully show Trevor Dyer, Commodore of SBYC in Dawn, a clean pair of heels.
This time round, I will be joined by three other Bews’ – son, Andrew, who sailed with me in 2008, eldest grandson, Deavon and Andrew’s youngest son, Tristan. We will be joined by a fellow Saldanha Bay Yacht Club member, Jason Burton, who has been sailing since he was five years of age, initially in dinghies and a Cat for the last three years.
Both the grandsons have had a fair amount of experience sailing their Flying 15 in races at the club. They achieved as second place in the Frostbite series in 2009/2010. Unfortunately, due to school commitments, Deavon could not continue his sailing this year, but Tristan in fact went on to win the trophy for Most Improved Sailor 2010. They have both been threatened with the “cat-o-nine tails” if the Spinnaker comes down at all during the trip!!
As I am not prepared to battle the winds again on the return trip to Cape Town, the crew will join the rest of the family on the RMS for the Christmas festivities.
